Make Your Gas Go Further With Good Driving Habits and Good Deals

If you think that you’re spending too much of your hard-earned cash on gas, then you’re probably right, and you’re definitely not alone. The sad truth about gasoline is that, in the long run, it’s only going to get more and more expensive. That means, of course, that you’re going to have to budget more and more money every month for the stuff. There is some good news; however, you can limit your expenditure by following a few simple steps:

  • Don’t over-do the acceleration. The harder you press your gas pedal, the more gas is being injected into your engine to be burned up.  If you press the pedal too quickly, the car will accelerate more quickly, but you will waste gas. It’s always more efficient to gradually build up speed.
  • Allow your vehicle to coast wherever possible. (This is particularly relevant for times when you find yourself in moderate traffic and/or driving through an area with lots of traffic lights.) Frequently speeding up and braking unnecessarily is extremely fuel inefficient. Try to coast if you anticipate having to slow down anyway.
  • Empty your car of all unnecessary items. The heavier your car, the more gas you’ll burn moving it around. If you’re unlucky (like me), and don’t actually need your golf clubs in your car from Monday to Friday, don’t pay the extra fuel costs to drive them around all week!
  • Look out for fuel deals. Find a gas station that can offer you a good deal on your gas, member rewards, etc. There are companies out there that value customer loyalty, and will offer customers cheaper deals.
